Re: Hollywood Strings 2
I was excited there for a moment... is it just me or does it sound rather flat and sterile? The shorts seem to lack bite, the thematic line feels quite disjointed at times and the Celli don't appear to "sing" at all. I did like the mordents though, sounded great to me, which makes me wonde...

Re: Arturia V Collection X
And I don’t wanna torture you any more than I already have, but a more advanced and sophisticated contraption based on the 'wine glasses' thing, is the glass harmonica, apparently invented by Benjamin Franklin (during the time he lived in London). Mozart wrote several pieces for it. Here’s John Wil...

Re: Black Friday tips
I went in thinking that I’d like it for the low end of the 1991. Turns out that I rather enjoy the 1026 and it’s already in use on two pieces. Yours is a good summary.

Re: Savant Audio / Quantum Room Simulator
I've spent about 30 minutes with it yesterday, running it as a replacement for Liquidsonics' 7th Heaven on a buss, as well as on the Master (I don't think this is the ideal way of using this particular one) and while it's not enough time to know its innards well enough yet, I do have to say that I I...

Re: Apple M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max
Luke, there is a lot of mystery surrounding cache management in the M3 chips afaik. This is from Apple: “Dynamic Caching, unlike traditional GPUs, allocates the use of local memory in hardware in real time. With Dynamic Caching, only the exact amount of memory needed is used for each task. This is ...

Re: Apple M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max
WTH is “unified memory” anyway? I understand that RAM isn’t exactly RAM anymore, but I don’t get how it works. It refers to the CPU and GPU using the same (physical) memory. In plain English: instead of having two separate cupboards, one where the CPU is allowed to store things and one where the GP...

Re: Savant Audio / Quantum Room Simulator
I've been waiting for someone to do this for a long time. Happy that it turns out to be the same guys who did the Quantum Evolution. There's something special about that one, so I look forward to spending some time with this one.

Re: VSL : Synchron Duality Strings (Sordino) Released !
Interesting idea on the EQ matching, though I'm not sure I own a real time version. I wonder if there would be an EQ on EQ effect though, as HS's Sordino is itself a simulation? Thanks for the kind words, and totally agree on the assessment of the two libraries. I feel mean giving SDS back - it is ...

Re: VSL : Synchron Duality Strings (Sordino) Released !
Well done, Guy! I think the HOOPUS versions have come a long way and are really starting to sound good. Worth wrestling with for sure (SDS still has the sweeter sound, but close enough for Rock 'n' Roll, as they say). Another option, perhaps not as good but maybe worth a try, could be to do some EQ ...

Re: Cherry Audio Korg PS-3300
Yes, I understand. Plus having a load of samples for a synth seems like a bit of a waste of space, but the thing sounds good and the presets are amongst the better ones I'm used to from their catalog. The only other sampled synth of theirs that I enjoy is the Synthox, based on the nearly eponymous E...

Re: Cherry Audio Korg PS-3300
Actually, unless I'm mistaken, UVI has had their sampled version out for a few years now, the UVS-3200. Got it early on and quite like it. I'll check out the Cherry Audio as I like the stuff I've bought from them so far. Quick Off Topic: 4 other Cherry Audio Synths (including their Mercury 4; DCO-10...

Re: VSL : Synchron Duality Strings (Sordino) Released !
Can you include an agile passage or two, Guy? Also, did you pay €395? Sure - the main thing I want to do won't be shareable, but I can do something else as well. Feel free to send midi, in fact, I can play around with the different options. And yes - you only get the 14 day thing if you order throu...

Re: VSL : Synchron Duality Strings (Sordino) Released !
Hm, CONTACT mockup is very nice (tangentially, how has Silvestri not won an Academy Award? Am I in an alternate reality?). The sound is just lovely and detailed enough. Wish I used the VSL stuff I have more, so that I could justify adding these to my toolbox. But as it is, somehow, despite the clear...

Re: Abbey Road Orchestra - Violins 1 announced
Having watched the video, for me it's confirmed that this sounds pretty damn good. Seems consistent throughout with thoughtful, useful articulations and programming. And that room (with release setting!). I'm definitely impressed.

Re: Abbey Road Orchestra - Violins 1 announced
Lots of reverb, but sounding nice. Legato sounds adaptive to my ears with short transition on the runs he was playing and portamento toward the end. Don't think I'll ever bite, but that's a pretty good start.

Wow, I really liked the sound. And they are debuting their own virtual space? Between these guys and Musical Sampling, lately it’s been quite tricky not to succumb to temptation, even if you’re already covered on all this….

Re: East West Hollywood Fantasy Orchestra Strings
Right, Tolkien. Point taken. It's just that, well, that story has been around for a while now and despite having established a standard that productions might want to emulate, I still think we should collectively have more "Fantasy" when it comes to the, err, Fantasy Genre. But I digress a...

Re: East West Hollywood Fantasy Orchestra Strings
While I have little interest in this, admittedly, I do quite like the sound. I think they did well with the sound palette. I'm only confused as to why "Fantasy" became synonymous with "Middle Ages."

Re: Futurephonic Rhythmizer 2.1 VST and AU
Wow. This is quite cool and fills a niche for me. I'm usually tinkering around with an arpeggiator until I get something decent and often just end up playing the part in after all. This could be quite the shortcut to get closer more quickly! Looks very versatile and for $25... (though these little &...

Re: Arturia Pigments 4
Rats! I have barely had time to open Pigments 3 since I updated and now this... Watched the video and boy, just having the "Play" page come up first is a godsend: I love me a complex synth but it was positively overwhelming before. Yep, modulation looks as simple as can be now. Hopefully, ...

Re: Native Instruments voucher and new free instrument
Can't blame you. Feel the same way, largely. The thing about the (uninspiring) Play series for me is like you said, synth presets, not particularly outstanding ones either. So if I can program them on my array of HW/SW synths, I don't 1. want to take up unnecessary GB on my SSDs and 2. be robbed of ...

Re: Native Instruments voucher and new free instrument
Actually, the voucher did work for me very late last night in the US store, but apparently only briefly before NI realized the glitch. I did indeed get Neoverb for free, which is ironic, because even at $25 I wasn't going to buy it (lots of verbs already and this one doesn't seem all that great to m...
