Re: Incirios announcement - a new sampler and audio engine

Anyone else get 3 emails from them within the same minute? They're shipping upgrade codes for L&S CS to the new sampler and I got 3 different ones. Choose your own adventure, I guess. :) 5 points to Gryffindor for not having any tracking information whatsoever in their emails, which is refreshin...

Oops, String Murmurations uses Codemeter. I wish I had noticed Guy's comment before I bought it. Buyer's remorse even before striking the first note.

Re: Crow Hill: String Murmurations (intro £149)

Christian's argument is that straight, simple samples lose the richness and texture of a group of players performing together struggling with complexity and timing where the outcome is blurry and wonderful, using Hedwig's theme as an example. It's hard to disagree with that, but solving the problem ...

Re: NKS partner 50% off sale and new NI keyboards

I wonder if they'll improve the keybed of the S88. I have the MK1 and I really don't like it. Creaky, plasticky keys. I do quite like the aftertouch though. I've had my eye on the Numa X Piano GT for a while as a possible future upgrade, but I'll be interested to see what reviews of the S88 MK3 are ...

Re: Avid to be Acquired for $1.4 Billion

I've not seen a single case of any company acquired by a private equity firm (which STG is) actually benefiting any consumer. Their singular goal upon acquisition becomes value extraction. Features get squeezed, monetized as much as customers can bear, morale within the product engineering team rapi...

Re: Spitfire Audio BBC SO Piano

What‘s your problem with HZP? It's ultimately the same as my criticism of 90% of other piano libraries I've tried: it feels all wrong, like I'm hitting a mechanical switch that triggers samples. Which is of course fundamentally all a sample-based piano library ever is, except some libraries do a mu...

Re: Spitfire Audio BBC SO Piano

It does sound nice. But I fell into this trap with HZP, which is perhaps one of the biggest wastes of money I've spent on sampling yet. (The honeymoon phase was rather significant as I recall, but very short lived.) So I kind of do understand how one could fall into an initial starting point of nega...

Re: Spitfire Audio Albion 2: Loegria retired and 50% off [2023 - now unretired]

Well, being charitable, the reason is usually that the vendor doesn't want to continue supporting it and be obligated to release bug fixes (and security patches, which is less of a relevant factor in this industry). In Spitfire's case, they handwave this away by saying "it's not a bug, it's a f...

Re: Zynaptiq Orange Vocoder IV released

I had fun just playing around with using it as a vocal harmonizer. Now if only I could sing. (Even pitch-snapping can't save me.) I did find that synth channel was too loud even at its lowest setting. I wanted to mix a subtle synth layer, but with vocoder at 1.0 (max) and synth at 0.01 (lowest value...

Re: Virharmonic Bohemian Cello v4 released (not UVI)

The installation process remains completely hopeless -- you will be confused by it and do something wrong, I assure you -- and the CodeMeter copy protection stuff seems even more intrusive than it was with the violin -- it launches CodeMeter Control Center on startup occupying Yet Another Slot in yo...

Re: Incirios announcement - a new sampler and audio engine

Excited by the prospect of a legitimate Kontakt competitor. This "node-based scripting" looks accessible to non-programmers, but I just can't see it scaling well at all once things move beyond the trivial. And anyone who's comfortable with coding would go mad within minutes trying to muddl...

Re: Production Voices 300 Grand (Full Version)

I find I get a lot of clicking when pre-attack is enabled, particularly with the Inside mic perspective. Other mic perspectives aren't nearly as bad, but still too problematic to use. Example with the pre-attack level at max to better hear it. (It doesn't seem to be a clipping issue because the clic...

Re: Production Voices 300 Grand (Full Version)

Wow Piet, that's a rare endorsement nearly up to the level of your infamous Emotional Cello review. :) Having the option to adjust the low, mid and high registers separately, for instance, would greatly increase the musical powers of the instrument. I can imagine, to give an example, that some playe...

Re: Production Voices 300 Grand (Full Version)

I only had a few minutes to spend on it so far, but my first impressions are fairly middling. Pedal feel isn't bad -- at least it does much better than most sample-based pianos I've tried, however there is occasionally something wonky with the release (which you can actually hear at 6:54 in this vid...

Re: Xperimenta / Piano F

I say 'hopefully' because the playability problem is such that one can't help but wonder if there actually was a true piano player among the people who programmed and (beta-)tested this library. Because if none of those people heard the (very noticeable) problem the first time around, it is not a c...

Re: CLAP: new plugin standard from u-he and Bitwig

But really the most important thing here is the unencumbered license. Steinberg's governance over VST was not exactly admirable (especially the way they dealt with retiring VST2), plus the license is quite loaded and basically Steinberg is free to pull the rug under everyone else who signs it, when...

Re: Novation Launchkey 88

The Numa X Piano GT is fairly new and escaped my awareness entirely. Been looking at this and find myself tempted. The biggest drawback for me is the price: I don't need any of the built-in sounds, internal audio device/mixing stuff, really all I want is quality piano-feel keybed with after touch a...

Re: Novation Launchkey 88

You know, I had previously written off the SL Grand due to the lack of pitchbend wheel (the modulation sticks are kinda piddly), but I think I'm nowadays more willing to compromise that (because I ultimately don't use pitchbend much). Thanks for reminding me it supports AT. The Numa X Piano GT is fa...

Re: Novation Launchkey 88

I'm in another camp altogether. Unhappy with my S88's key feel, I've been somewhat in the market for this contradiction: piano feel (fully weighted, graded key bed) while also supporting after touch. I'd have bought the VPC1 by now if it also supported aftertouch.
