Bolder Sounds / Dolceola

Post by Piet De Ridder »

Another nice one from Bolder Sounds: the Dolceola. "The Dolceola is a rare and unusual American instrument from a family of stringed instruments that were produced in the early 1900’s. We understand there are only about 20 Dolceolas in circulation today. A Dolceola is a musical instrument resembling a miniature piano, but which is in fact a zither with a keyboard. It is used in traditional holy blues and has an unusual, angelic, music-box sound. Dolceolas were made by the Toledo Symphony Company from 1903 to 1907."

- Bolder's virtual Dolceola can be played in 2 modes - the first being a traditional 4 octave linear keyboard, the 2nd mode is chordal mode. The chordal mode turns each key in the 2nd octave from the bottom into chordal assignments of the users choice. These user assigned chords can then be saved as a preset or bank for future use. The real Dolceola is played in this manner which creates a unique sound. However, with our virtual Dolceola you can play in any key unlike the actual Dolceola which was intended to be used in the key of Eb.
- An Octave Button creates a virtual octave shifting all samples an octave lower layered against the original pitch.
- On the Velocity Page you can make your own map of the 8 sampled velocity layers with an easy button interface to turn each layer ON and OFF. These Velocity maps can then be saved as presets.
- 2 Dolceola bonus instruments are included as well - Dolceola Harmonics.nki and Dolceola Muted.nki. The Harmonics .nki has each string sample at the octave harmonic and the Muted .nki features samples with the string muted at the base of the string for a percussive effect.
- Snapshots (presets) are included with each Dolceola .nki. Look at the bottom of this page for the complete .pdf manual and documentation on how to load the snapshots into Kontakt.
