Re: Spitfire Audio acquired by SPLICE

Edit 2: I dug a little and discovered that Callum isn't actually just a rando; he's Spifire's QA Engineer, Callum McNeill. Yes, I was going to say I've seen him in videos well before the Splice announcement. No grand conspiracy here I'm afraid. No, "conspiracy" isn't a word I would have chosen; but ...

Re: Spitfire Audio acquired by SPLICE

It didn’t take the new corporate overlords long to start moving away from Paul as the face of the company: Join Callum (AKA “Rando”) for an exciting product walkthrough (Okay, I added the AKA “Rando” part.) The product, by the way, is Abbey Road Orchestra: Oboes Core and Professional , which I believ ...

Re: And now, Brian Wilson…

Yeah, Larry , Wilson's death is another major passing. Both Sly Stone and Brian Wilson were music geniuses who shaped the musical landscape of their times. From the innocence of his early surf music to the sophistication of Pet Sounds , the poignancy of “God Only Knows,” and elaborate production of “ ...

Re: One of the Greats, Sly Stone, Has Passed

Thanks, Larry. Yeah, that's a beautiful moment. It's funny that I get so focused on Sly the songwriter, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist, I sometimes forget about Sly the singer; but his voice, both as a singer and as a message giver, was very powerful.

One of the Greats, Sly Stone, Has Passed

Sly Stone, pioneering leader of funk band Sly and the Family Stone, dies at 82 I wish my words could do justice to this creative genius who had a big impact on me. Sly was my favorite artist of one of my favorite genres of music. Not only did he transform and expand the language of funk, he ...

I’m impressed, Larry. I just had the Rhodes, myself. That sounds like a lot to haul around!

Re: Pro Tools Forte - batch importer and exporter

I’ve been following this for a few months, but I wasn’t aware of Avid’s offer. Thanks for the heads up, Guy . It should also be noted that Forte Import is now compatible with Logic Pro as well as Pro Tools. It’s nice that Avid is giving those who have active support plans or subs a basic version of F ...

Re: Templates again, and process

I favor the one-template-per-project approach. I like choosing a palette and imposing restrictions, in order to create a tailor-made sound. As a Pro Tools user, I often import tracks from other sessions to make easier work of setting new templates up. I do have several large-to-gargantuan templates ...

The PSP DRC Dynamic Range Controller

It reimagines and expands on the original concept, incorporating additional features to enhance its utility. The video below provides a great demo of the concept: https://www ...

Re: Orchestral Tools TIDES: Chamber Orchestra from Rachel Portman

I used the word "brittle" and it's not quite right but close. It's part of what makes it emotive, there's an honest humanity in it. It's not saccharine, there's pain behind the beauty that Hollywood airbrushes away. Geez now I'm sounding like Christian Henson. But I guess something like this was ...

Avid Link 2025.5

Avid Link 2025.5 has been released, so that may be a sign that a new Pro Tools update is finally around the corner.

New in Avid Link 2025.5:

"Avid Link 2025.5.0 includes optimized core performance by removing low-use features, faster sign-in/download."

Just the opposite for me. I stopped also using ProTools when clients stopped asking me to deliver built reels:) Yeah, one DAW is generally enough. Nonetheless, I've typically kept Logic Pro around for its virtual instruments. Perhaps I'll wind up using it for stem separation as well. By the way, I ...

Re: New Logic Pro update

Wow, that’s possibly the longest New Features and Enhancements list I’ve ever seen! At first glance, I’m more curious about the Stem Splitter update than any other feature. In my experience, separating keyboards from guitar has been a tough ask. Separating piano and guitar would be a good start. I do ...

Re: Music That Stands The Test of Time

I still have affection for Jethro Tull, Vand Der Graaf and Genesis' production from the 70s, and they still evoke feelings the rare times I listen to them, but the quality of the songs appears to be not as shining as it felt then. Still, the amount of inventiveness those young musicians put in ...

Re: Music That Stands The Test of Time

THOMAS DOLBY - The Flat Earth I love this album, Guy , and of course, most of Thomas Dolby's work. I used to sing "White City" in a cover band back then. It was a lot of fun sculpting sounds in my OB-8 to try to sound like the ones on Dolby's record. Many of those early '80s artists are my ...

Music That Stands The Test of Time

What music did you like when you were younger that doesn’t hold up as much as years go by? I’m not talking about music you liked when your age was in the single digits that you simply outgrew as your tastes matured. I’m thinking about music you liked once you had developed as a musician that you feel ...
