Re: Apple M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max

Well, the achilles heel of the shared memory architecture is obviously the scalability with regards to RAM size. For applications where you need terabytes of RAM, there is just no alternative (yet) to Intel, AMD, and the like. When Apple moved its Mac Pro from an Intel-based design to their own sili...

Re: Futuristic User Interface Sound Effects

BlueZone has an incredible stock of great sounds, in particular their "war of the worlds" type libraries are very inspiring, in particular, if you don't use them in their pristine form, but incorporate them into your (tonal) sound design.

Re: Apple M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max

Thanks for the explanation, Matthias! Does that mean that in an SoC like the Mx there is no longer a need for a cache? Since the distance is now minuscule is there even a need to store smaller bits of data nearby? No. L1/L2/L3-Caches are still a necessity, but the impact of a cache miss is way less...

Re: NKS partner 50% off sale and new NI keyboards

Nice updates, in particular, if you come from the original series. I'm coming from an S25 (which seems to be discontinued), so I have to cope with the longer length. Unfortunately there is no 3-octave model.

tack wrote: Jul 03, 2023 11:34 am It does sound nice. But I fell into this trap with HZP, which is perhaps one of the biggest wastes of money I've spent on sampling yet. (The honeymoon phase was rather significant as I recall, but very short lived.)
What‘s your problem with HZP?

4. New VST Synth from Synapse Audio
Sounds juicy, but that's the first I hear. Is that a generic wish or something you have heard about?

Great sounding to me, but I really miss a vibrato with these winds.

I think it sounds more lush than the (also free) TAL U NO, albeit with less high frequencies. I also like the manual control which results in some interesting tones.

Turned out I became aware of my additional tax payment for 2019 (and 2020 as well), which is quite a mouthful, hence I had to ignore all offers. 😟

Re: Arturia OB-Xa

I have the Arturia V Collection 6, I'm not a fan of their VST synths. They have nice GUI's but sound plastic, and flat whenever I play them. This! And I thought it‘s just me. Some people are raving about the V collection and pigments, but the sound is leagues below the usual suspects (U-he, RevealS...

Re: The Nemeio customisable keyboard

Pretty good approach, e-Ink seems to be the proper technology choice for key caps. That said, unless they release products with ergonomic layouts, many people will pass. Been using Microsoft ergonomic keyboards for decades and will never again consider a ‚regular‘ layout.

„Vision of a workflow” does not sound like sample libraries. Those short woodwinds sound lovely.

Frozen Plain moves away from Kontakt

Yet another – this time even a very small developer – moves away from Kontakt (https://frozenplain.com/frozenplain-and-kontakt/). Apparently they decided on this some months before and have something already. Here's an overview of their "MIRAGE" engine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhUv...

Had never expected them to listen _so much_ to their audience. I'm genuinely impressed. This machine is the bomb for all creative professionals for at least one decade. Yes, it's expensive, but IMO worth it. Off-topic here, but as a professional software developer, I can't wait to see how fast this ...

They seem to have signed an exclusive distribution contract, I‘d wish they had bought them, since they bring an astounding level of love for the small details. But lets see, perhaps this is just the first step.

Re: Native Instruments Noire: Grand Piano

With half a dozen of pianos I wanted to not like this. I failed. The "particle engine" is boosting the good 'ole piano sound into the world of contemporary sounds. I'm sure you can recreate this effect by hand with a sequencer, but that would be much more tedious and boring. This alone jus...

Orchestral Tools moves away from Kontakt!

Well, not strictly, since it looks like they're going to support Kontakt for a while, but – given the convenience their new system adds – I'm sure sooner or later most people will migrate as well. First Spitfire Audio, now Orchestral Tools – are we witnessing the decline of the Kontakt ecosystem? In...
