Re: Arturia V Collection X

I've been gigging maybe 6-8 times a year for 5+ years at a club that has a CP70. I really enjoy playing it, and the rest of the (jazz) band seems to dig it. Yes, it's a unique beast with, let's say, "challenging" bass tuning (extremely high inharmonicity). I remember when a younger pop-roc...

Re: Acoustic Samples V-Winds

I’ve only listened to the oboe tracks, but they all seemed to be played forte with a hard attack, which I find curious. The Couperin has some less aggressive attacks, and mostly sounds very good to me. Speaking of oboe attacks, I'll possibly repeat a story that I might have told before. I think it'...

Re: Rhodes release a V8 sample based plugin

My understanding is that the Pro version includes the same software as the regular version, but they also give you some felt to shove under they keys, so you can duplicate that authentic Rhodes action. I hope there's eventually also a deluxe version with a cigar burn on the top and cigarette ash bu...

Wouldn't -1% off be 101% of the regular price (double negative, ya know)? :P

Upgraded--glad to have the new features.

Who else knew it was Piet's music in the second video within about two seconds? :)

Great job, Piet!

Re: IK modelled drums - MODO Drums

While I applaud the innovation, it's not like the end product gives us whole new sonic worlds to explore. It's just a different way of achieving much the same thing, with a few plusses and a few minuses. I think so too. Until, that is, Piet gets his hands on it and blows us all away with the amazin...

Re: IK modelled drums - MODO Drums

Given the 20gb library size (and a few IK details unearthed on the other forum), it looks like the cymbals are sampled. That makes sense in that cymbals are the most complex and diverse sound source in a drum kit (that’s why I have more than 40 real cymbals). So while it makes sense that they record...

Re: Emotional Cello by Harmonic Subtones deal - 129$

I have it and think it is very good. It is satisfying to play (though not as much fun as a modeled instrument), with lots of color choices, fairly even sampling and programming, and the resulting sound is quite good for a VI.

Re: Black Friday 2018

Not sure where to put this, but I paid a rare visit to VIC just now and noticed some people saying that they were getting a free gift of 8dio's 1928 piano if they purchased the 8dioOboe for $8 (I think this is today's offer but I'm not sure). Others reported buying the oboe and not getting the free...

Re: BF/CM Ultimate Acquisitions

As far as archtop libraries go, I have them both (OT and IS). The tone of the IS archtop is much more to my liking. Specifically, the low notes are clearer, the instrument has a smooth, less twangy attack, and the gauge of strings allows lower octaves to play more in tune (to my ears). Plus, it has ...

Re: Audiobro Modern Scoring Brass

For me the thing that really doesn't work in other libraries, is solo instrument crossfading between dynamic layers. I've never heard it sound good, especially when listening up close for a detailed solo. That’s the problem that bothers me the most with brass libraries (and woodwinds, solo strings,...

Your Demo is stunning, Piet! No surprise there…

I like the Schumann demo as well.

I just bought it - it's really nice - just started customizing the "Warm" preset. Tons of potential.

Just to be clear, Larry's track uses the "retired" Garritan Strad, not the Bolder Sounds Fiddle, right?

Hi Kayle and all, I went ahead and crossgraded to Dorico a few weeks ago. I haven't used it for any serious projects yet, but from my relatively little experience with it at this point, I agree with pretty much all of your observations. It just seems to be a better paradigm than Finale or Sibelius (...

Head over to GearSlutz, and navigate to the "Studio building / acoustics" forum, and then go to the "Bass traps acoustic panels, foam etc" sub-forum. There are lots of DIY examples there. You will probably want to modify somewhat the examples you find there for stand mounting, bu...

Re: Modartt Pianoteq / Grotrian Concert Royal

I bought it instantly upon seeing Piet's post. It is really nice, no doubt, with a different tonal palette. I am just starting to explore it, so I'm not going to give a shoot-from-the-hip comparison to the Blüthner at this point. However, it is a beautiful piano for sure, as are almost all of the re...

Re: Best Service Studio Box III SFX set 75% off for a few hours

Do you mean the ones with the restrictive license? I don't remember, but I don't think that they came from Big Fish. They've been deleted from my hard drive, since I didn't use them. It was long enough ago that they came on CD's, which have probably been pitched or recycled.

It looks to me like there are 12 days left on this one, Guy. But thanks for pointing it out. As someone who doesn't need or use SFX very often, it's nice to hear that you think it's useful and a good value. I have shied away from buying SFX because, years ago, I bought some and then found the licens...
