I'd call it sad - I have grave concerns for UA and a few others that have joined the race to the bottom. I've gotten my money's worth out of most of my tools, but I'd still be sad to see them disappear.

Piet De Ridder wrote: Nov 21, 2025 2:18 am It depends on what you’re using a compressor of course — for 99% of the times I think my tracks could do with some compression (which isn’t very often and usually very little, because I really don’t like (the sound of) compression on sample-based audio), I have more than enough excellent choices already — , but if you want to apply some compression specifically as part of ending up with a sound that evokes bygone era’s, this one offers a couple of things that make it quite unique and very useful indeed. (And definitely worth $12.9.)

A nice thing about Material Comp is that, on top of its 6 types of compression, it’s got a few other colouring and dynamic processes going — if you enable them — that can contribute a lot to the sense of ending up with audio that has that rear-view mirror. If that type of audio is part of the sonic and musical aesthetic you are aiming for, Material Comp is, well, I wouldn’t say a must-have, but definitely very, very welcome.

If however you merely want a solid and versatile compressor to perform the typical compression tasks, chances are you have the right tools for the job already and certainly don’t need add this one.__
Thank you Piet. That makes sense.
So it's more a special purpose tool. Not what I need right now but might become useful in certain situations.
Hm, I'll check the demo.

I think I upgraded from Standard to Advanced somewhere around RX6, and I've stupidly played the game of "Gotta keep updating to the Advanced version!" ever since, even though I don't think I have ever used one of the Advanced-Only modules. Seriously, I don't think there's ever been even one time.

For that matter, I'm not even sure if Spectral Noise Reduction (pretty much the only module I actually use) is any better in RX11 than it was in RX9. Or even RX6. But I'm a sucker for deals, so ...

I dunno. Maybe not so strange.

Being able to squeeze additional revenue from some plugins that were written 20 (!) years ago is just icing on the cake considering that the development costs were covered long ago. It’s like the EW model-doesn’t matter WHAT they charge for the Hollywood series or the EWQLSO series, it’s just…extra (over the marketing costs, I suppose.)

There’s SO much competition for the music software dollar. Developers must REALLY appreciate the burgeoning hobbyist market.

Edit-btw, are you saying they have a deal-any 10 for $100, or are you saying there are 10 UAD plug ins that sell for $10 each?

Any 10 of their non-hardware plugins for $100 - https://www.uaudio.com/products/uad-mix-tape-pro-bundle

BTW I do appreciate their graphic design in their banner here, even though it makes no logical sense it's just great.

Whelp, even though I didn't strictly have a need for anything this year, ended up getting a few very fun toys. The latest have been Roland's just-released "Earth Electric Piano" package, which for the intro price is great.

But the real star is something I didn't need in the slightest: another top-tier piano VI. Which is to say, I've finally gotten my hands on one of the Synthogy Ivory pianos, specifically the Ivory III German D. I was a little troubled at first since I didn't really love any of the presets, but after getting under the hood and setting defaults to my liking, it clearly deserves its stellar reputation, and it's the only piano I have that can compete with my all-time favorite, Modern D. VI Labs and Synthogy are clearly the forefront piano VI developers at the moment, in my opinion (sorry, VSL) and they complement each other extremely well. While Modern D effortlessly sounds brilliant in just about any setting, Ivory's customization capabilities are incredible. And the pianos themselves sound different enough from each other in the midrange to be equally useful. I can flip a coin and enjoy working with either one.

Synthogy don't do sales very often so I'm glad I jumped on this one.

A couple of steals on the Musio marketplace from Audio Ollie - LA Modern Percussion and Nashville Scoring Strings are both a burger-equivalent £22 each (also Scoring Synths).

https://portal.musio.com/marketplace/?d ... AudioOllie

NB - you don't need a Musio paid subscription for these as I understand it.

EDIT - and as an alt if you want both, the Kontakt versions are in a bundle here for $99 - https://pulse.audio/product/modern-scor ... dio-ollie/

I agree that £22 (or $29 USD) is a great buy for these libraries, but I shudder at £22 being the cost of a burger in the UK. You could buy three of those in a many restaurants here for $29. Is that now the typical cost of a burger in the UK, Guy? I ask because I plan to return to England next year.

Best,

Geoff

Well, a burger with chips (fries!) in a decent pub is between £15-£20. But someone told me McDonalds meals were £8 now the other day so to be fair in McD terms Nashville Scoring Strings is nearly THREE burger meals.

In general eating out is more expensive than the US still, but grocery shopping is way cheaper here, and mainland Europe way cheaper than us.

Spitfire looks like it is doing things differently this year - 50% off sitewide and another 20% off for email subscribers.

(stats question - is that or 70% off or 20% off the 50% off = 60% off?)

Went with Spectralayers 12 Pro, with the competitive crossgrade option and VAT deducted it was a very good price. The Toontrack Orchestral percussion also looks very attractive btw!

I have my eye for a while on the Legend HZ from Synapse Audio, but seems they are skipping Black Friday :(

How are you finding Spectralayers, Jaap? I need to spend more time with it, but its pretty damn impressive to me. Processing can be kinda slow, but miracles take time I guess.

I've only actually been seduced by this and V Collection thus far. My laziness is a saving grace - with SSO just the thought off adding an entire new orchestra to my template exhausts me.

Really loving it so far! I have made for a new library a ton of recordings from outside stuff here on the farm where I live, like percussive sounds from banging on tractors and all other kind of farm equipment and I had a lot of additional sounds. Removing has never been easier and as well removing the ambiences to create really dry sounds, but the most fun part is in selecting frequencies and harmonics and create new stuff from there. For me €123 really well spent!

How is the V collection? I am still on number 9 and have not really explored all the new stuff to be honest to see if it is worth it.

That sounds excellent! Such exciting times for sound design and manipulation.

Similarly I haven't had much time with V11, I've been so busy on non-musical projects. I rarely use V Collection at the best of times which is inexcusable. I really need to train myself to think V when creating stuff, it's habit more than anything else. I was really impressed with the much maligned Augmented series and that Lo-fi thing had some absolutely gorgeous useable patches in - any fault I feel is mine not the product, it's superb.

That is my problem as well with the V collection, I don't think enough of it and always grab the usual suspects first (Omni, Zebra, Falcon, Avenger), but I think they really stepped up their game the last couple of years and think I should check it out.

The Waves freebie is a one-knob thing that does... something...

https://www.waves.com/black-friday-2025/free-plugin

Magma StressBox shapes the musical tension and feel of your sounds, bringing new life into flat tracks. Turn right for explosive punch and energy, or left for intimate control and focus. Each twist transforms your track’s feel, adding drama, contrast, and movement in a single knob.
