Note - existing Analog Lab Pro owners get new presets from the Jup-8000V, Synthx V and MiniBrute V, plus anyone with any of the Augmented series gets those updates too for free.

On a Black Friday sale now, $99 upgrade for me from v8 which is ridiculous. Of course I don't need it and of course I'm considering it.

Some version of Analog Labs came along with my Arturia 88 key weighted controller. It’s interesting because the controller knobs and sliders are already set up to use to modify the presets, but I haven’t found the sounds so compelling that I wanted to stay on the upgrade path. The more comprehensive package is probably a different story.

I think the truth of it for me is that it's never my jumping off point, and it really could easily be. 80% of time I start with Omnisphere, the other 20% is split between Diva, RePro, Avenger or Nexus are where I know I want something specific in areas where they excel.

Being so broad, I guess it has to rival the mighty Omnisphere and I always pick the latter. Arturia synth engines have improved over the years, and it's great to be able to start from the preset with a handful of controls in Analog Lab and then open up in Pro to the full thing. There are some specifics I very occasionally reach for in there like the DX7 and I like the thought that I'd have a solid TB303 in there.

Basically it's one of those fantastic products I own yet hardly ever use, like Modo Bass. It kind of annoys me that in the heat of battle I always gravitate to what I know best.

Specialty Kontakt libraries are good for specific purposes-a mandolin, a particular cello or violin or piano, etc. The collections (with the Omni exception) get much less use, it seems.

I'll bet a lot of us are in similar positions... there are only two additions to the collection that interest me in the least - the Jupiter and the SEM, and I have quite a collection of SEM emulations, so not a lot of need there. Roland emulations are a little more scarce, but I've got that covered too, even if I have to fire up the MKS-80<G>.

Before the $99 price it was a no-brainer. Now I will probably revisit the collection, but for now I expect I will pass. I do get some mileage from them, but not enough to warrant yet another "investment" in the line.

Time will tell!

Hm, now you’re making me waver, Guy. In the video above I’m particularly enamored with the JP8000 and the Synthex, they sound just like I want them to. At $99 this is slowly becoming unavoidable, despite Bill’s perfect assessment above. Same here. So today I guess I’ll open v8 here and use it to write something. See if it can lure me away from my usual suspects fo some basics.

Well obviously I caved.

It's just stupid. When will this ever stop?

Arturia have gone from being somewhat derided to actively celebrated. The quality of their emulations has become excellent, and it's pretty much all there now. All of it. But of course that's not enough. With the exception of the brass, the Augmented series is pretty fabulous now, really like their hybrid approach and there's gorgeous sounds in abundance. And of course that's not enough either - Pure LoFi is stunningly good, probably besting the Unclean Machine Sonic Expansion from Spectrasonics in terms of really useable playable sounds that are gloriously evocative. And of course even that's not enough - the MiniBrute synth is a gloriously furious little bastard with a really simple interface that is a joy. And there's MiniFreak too.

I would have killed for 100th of all this back in the day. There's just nothing to complain about. If you want to limit yourself to any historic architecture with (certainly in their recent efforts) a faithful sound, it's all yours. If you want to cheat and add extra goodies then there they are under the hood.

And it costs PEANUTS.

Yes, I'm on the fence as well. Only have Pigments, Modular, JUP-8, ARP2600 and the Mini. Upgrade for me is €149.

As you said Guy, peanuts... for what I get. But would I use it? And more importantly, do I care if I use it or not: )

Hah, well said, Guy... As scary as national/global systemic stuff is right now (and it truly is), our sounds in the box are the stuff of dreams. Strange times indeed.

Thought some may find this useful:

The overall size of installing everything is 50gb which isn't an issue on the main rig, but my MacBook is a different story. In an ideal world I'd just have Analog Lab Pro with everything on that to keep the footprint down, but there doesn't seem to be a way of doing that (unless someone knows different?)

So I did a little rummaging on my C drive, and found that by far the thirstiest plugins for disk space are the Augmented series - those 7 plugins take half of the entire range at 24.9gb

Here's the file sizes of each plugin (and a few FX I have installed) for those who similarly need to keep their eye on the disk space (figures are GB):
