New Logic Pro update

Post by Ashermusic »

Especially glad that the Stem Splitter now also separates piano and guitar and they say that the audio quality is improved,

Here's the full list:
New in Logic Pro 11.2
New Features and enhancements
• Flashback Capture
◦ Recover and save a spontaneous performance that otherwise may have been lost because Logic Pro was not set to record.
◦ Enable cycle mode to improvise multiple takes, without the pressure of being in record – Logic Pro can then retrieve them to a take folder, or multiple new tracks.
◦ Use Flashback Capture on almost any source (MIDI, audio or external instruments) to capture dynamic performances as they happen.
• Enhanced Stem Splitter
◦ Split stems from audio recordings with even greater audio fidelity — now with support for guitar and piano.1
◦ Use the new submix feature to create a custom audio file, like an instrumental or just drums with bass.
◦ Use presets to quickly make sets of commonly used stem mixes like acapella, instrumental, instrumental with vocal, and more.
• Writing Tools in the Notepad
◦ Explore ideas like song lyrics, chords, and more using ChatGPT with integrated Writing Tools.2
• New Sound Packs
◦ Dancefloor Rush delivers peak-time Drum and Bass with hard-hitting synths and drums.
◦ Magnetic Imperfections brings unpredictable charm to every sound, evoking the unpolished soul of analog tape.
◦ Tosin Abasi brings his flavor of progressive metal guitar, with boutique amps and effects, distinctive picking styles, and signature crushing riffs.
• Search and Select
◦ Navigate large projects with ease by searching and selecting tracks by name or track number.
• Other new features include:
◦ Undo History is now saved with each project.
◦ It is now possible to search for and select tracks by name and track number
◦ When a portion of a MIDI region is copy and pasted using a Marquee selection, the pasted copy of the region now includes data from the original region outside the borders of the Marquee selection.
◦ The Dolby Atmos plug-in now offers a Direct 2.0 monitoring option.
◦ There is now an option to create a new empty take in MIDI Take folders.
◦ The Chord Track can now be imported from a different Logic Pro project.
◦ The Dolby Atmos plug-in now offers an option to switch the rendering mode between Music and Movie.
◦ The Mixer can now be configured to show long faders.
◦ Ableton Link and MIDI Clock can now be output at the same time.
◦ It's now possible to create a marker from a Marquee selection.
◦ Folder Stacks can now be directly converted to Summing Stacks.

Wow, that’s possibly the longest New Features and Enhancements list I’ve ever seen! At first glance, I’m more curious about the Stem Splitter update than any other feature. In my experience, separating keyboards from guitar has been a tough ask. Separating piano and guitar would be a good start.

I don’t expect I’ll use it anytime soon though. I’m still on Monterey; and as I'm primarily a Pro Tools user, I removed Logic Pro awhile back to make more room on my drive. I’ll probably install it again when I get a new computer, perhaps later this year.

Thanks for the info, Jay.

Best,

Geoff

Just the opposite for me. I stopped also using ProTools when clients stopped asking me to deliver built reels:)

Yeah, one DAW is generally enough. Nonetheless, I've typically kept Logic Pro around for its virtual instruments. Perhaps I'll wind up using it for stem separation as well.

By the way, I found this on my YouTube feed today. I thought I might as well include it, in case anyone is interested in a video:

Thanks for the headsup. FWIW, if you really care about high level stem separation, you better use https://ultimatevocalremover.com – granted, it's not "builtin" and thus less convenient than Logic, but you have access to better sounding models that way.

(The title is misleading, it's not just about removing vocals)

Nah, it's just for learning and practicing purposes.

If I may ask, what makes UVR superior? I’ve been using lalaai, which seems to do a pretty good job at guessing and separating stems but always looking for improvement.

There are not just the handful of models the binary comes with, but you can download from a whole set of partly very specialised models, which – in my opinion – if given the right source material for the job – lead to much less artefacts in the processed audio.
Moreover, you can build aggregate models (say, a vocal isolator and then a de-reverberator) that can do interesting things.

It's all about control. Logic Pro has no parameters, which is a good thing for instant gratification, but it's just one hammer for all nails.
Cheers,

There are not just the handful of models the binary comes with, but you can download from a whole set of partly very specialised models, which – in my opinion – if given the right source material for the job – lead to much less artefacts in the processed audio.
Moreover, you can build aggregate models (say, a vocal isolator and then a de-reverberator) that can do interesting things.

It's all about control. Logic Pro has no parameters, which is a good thing for instant gratification, but it's just one hammer for all nails.
Good to know, seems worth a try. I don’t use Logic so its stem separator isn’t a solution anyway. I do have uses for exporting stems and there are a lot of ai products appearing.

Re: New Logic Pro update

Thanks for the PSA, Jay. Long list of fixes indeed.

I'm wondering if anyone can reproduce the following bug: on a track with several plugins inserted, insert any other plug in the next available slot, then once the UI is open, close the plugin by clicking on the insert slot and not the red-button-close-the-window on the UI. This consistently crashes Logic on my system. Just gauging whether I need to report this, as I don't see it in the fixes list.
Pale Blue Dot.
