DaVinci Resolve 20 - free audio wizadry

Post by Guy Rowland »

DaVinci Resolve is a professional video editor which a) is free (there is a paid version with a few more bells and whistles) and b) has a very capable audio section by Fairlight.

With version 20 there are a host of new features, many AI badged. it's probably not going to be for many here because many of the features will likely produce groans - less talent required for a good job. But I wanted to highlight it because some of these tricks cannot be done in any other DAW at any price, AFAIK. It's pretty extraordinary.

Take Music Retimer. Either type in a new duration for the music or drag the handles and voila - the music is re-edited. Not stretched or truncated, actually re-edited with beginning, middle and end and hopefully seamless edits. Three variations too.

Or how about Voice Cloning. This is as terrifying as it sounds - you train the engine on a well recorded voice, then you can take a different voice (such as your own) and it will map your delivery onto the trained voice. Plenty of highly illegal applications here.

Once it has retimed your music and cloned your voices, it's time for the mix. Simply press Audio Assist, and it does the whole mix in a single click. It first detects whether clips are dialogue, music or sound effects. It then processes with de-essers, compressors, eq etc. Then finally it does a complete mix to any delivery standard, riding faders artistically. This takes all the drudgery out of mixing, freeing you up to do something more fulfilling like laundry or washing dishes.

That's just three of a host of new features. Some of the others are more familiar, such as Match EQ or beat detection. Video editors who are sonically challenged will be salivating. Audio editors will be weeping.

The beta of version 20 is reckoned to be stable and is available now - https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/pro ... nciresolve

Music Retimer could be a great help to create alt versions for production music albums. Cutting down your tracks to 10 seconds, 15 seconds, 30 seconds etc. isn't fun. I'll take all the help that I can get.

'Riding faders artistically' - that had me in stitches.
