Miroslav Philharmonik 2 $29.99

Post by Lawrence »

These samples, while quite old, certainly sound good though I doubt the programming is competitive. It’s been years since I tried them and I THINK I bought them at some point. They’re buried on an old disk somewhere.

I posted this because I had an amusing memory-they were originally released for a variety of hardware samplers. I used the Roland S700. The disks were released in a set of 4, for….
(wait for it…..)

$750 each. $3000 for the set.

Ouch.

And now almost everyone agrees that everything else is much better. And it is.

But... I just posted this elsewhere...

Fun and slightly awkward fact - they used this library on Lana Del Rey's sublime Video Games.

Does it sound totally real? Lord no. Listen to those sucking string pads. Every library in my template sounds better. But it absolutely fits and it works and I'm glad they didn't swap it for something "better".

I bought the Akai version of Miroslav Vitous Symphonic Orchestral Samples. It was back in 1998, if I recall correctly. I could load it on my Akai S1000, E-mu E-IV, and E-mu E4XT Ultra.

Soon thereafter, Peter Siedleczek's Advanced Orchestra was released; and I picked that one up too. Next, I bought East West - Quantum Leap Brass. Those three collections were the core of my orchestral setup, along with some InVision stuff and the Emulator factory libraries, until I bought EWQLSO Platinum shortly after it came out.

All of those samples were as good as it got back then.

Best,

Geoff

Version 2 is the new one correct? The new samples were an awful mess, like a project abandoned before it was finished. I still have it somewhere… the real value was the original samples were included, well organised and categorised which were the edition costing thousands. I remember having re-sampled many of the original patches for Kontakt with good results. The solo oboe for instance was good

I rode along on most of your journey-was on EWQLSO Gold and eventually upgraded. I also had Eric Persing’s Roland Orchestral Library, the Kurzweil 250 and some others.

I think I also had the Akai version of the MV disks. Roland was able to import Akai disks.

We seem to have made a lot of similar gear choices over the years, Larry. I had a Kurzweil K1000 and then K1200, along with one or two of their 1000 series rackmount expanders. I also had an Oberheim OB-8 back in the '80s; and if I recall correctly, you had an OB-X.

Best,

Geoff

OBX-a, Geoff. Not as good sounding, more stable. Presets! Digitally controlled oscillators that stayed in tune! Dedicated connectable hardware sequencer and drum machine! ePROMs for the drum machine!

Heady days. I prefer the stability of software synths though.

I agree, those were exciting times; and there are plenty of positives to today’s software choices.

Best,

Geoff
